How to Change Photo Background With AI (and Make It Look Real)

Change photo background with AI step by step: upload, prompt, pick a model, compare, refine. Plus copy-paste prompts and fixes for hair, scale and label text.

To change photo background with AI, upload the photo to an image to image tool, write one sentence that names the new scene and the things that must not change, and generate. A modern instruction-following model swaps the setting and relights your subject to match, so the person, pet or product looks like it was actually photographed there.

Below: the exact steps, prompts for common jobs, and fixes for results that look fake.

Background removal vs. background replacement

Background removal cuts the subject out and leaves it on transparency or plain white. Nothing about the subject changes. The light on it is still the light from your kitchen or your office, which is fine on a white page and looks odd on a new scene.

Background replacement puts the subject in a new place. Pasting a cut-out onto a new photo is the old way, and it is why so many composites look like stickers: wrong light direction, no shadow under the feet, mismatched colors.

An instruction-following model, the kind that powers an AI background changer today, does replacement differently. It reads your photo and your prompt together and redraws the whole frame. That means it can add warm rim light from a sunset, a soft shadow on the sand and a little blue from the sky on the subject's shoulders. If you want the background on why this works, see what image to image AI is.

The trade-off: redrawing the frame can shift small details. More on that below.

If your store or designer needs a true transparent file, a dedicated background remover is the right tool. If you want a finished image of your subject somewhere else, keep reading.

How to change photo background step by step

These steps use the image to image AI tool on the homepage.

1. Upload a good source photo

Drag, click or paste a JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 15 MB. The source matters more than the prompt:

  • The subject should be in focus and not cut off at awkward places.
  • Even, soft light is easiest to relight. Hard flash and deep shadows are harder to undo.
  • A subject that fills much of the frame keeps more detail than a tiny figure.

2. Write the prompt

Every background prompt needs two halves: the new scene, and what stays. A good default:

Replace the background with [scene], [light and time of day]. Keep the [subject], their [face / fur / label / clothes] and pose exactly the same, and match the lighting on them to the new scene.

The prompt box takes up to 1,500 characters, but two or three clear sentences beat a paragraph. If you're stuck, start from one of the idea chips under the box and edit it.

3. Pick the aspect ratio

Keep the original ratio unless you need a different frame. If you switch a portrait photo to a wide banner, the model has to invent much more scene around your subject, which is more room for mistakes. Change it when you mean it, such as a wide hero image.

4. Pick a model tier

TierModelResolutionCreditsUse it when
StandardNano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image)2K5Your first try for almost every swap
ProGPT Image 2.52K6Standard ignores part of the prompt, or you want a second opinion
HDNano Banana 24K8The result is right but needs to print or be cropped

Standard is also the free tier: one free image a day without an account, or 10 free credits a day (two Standard images) when you're signed in. Free results are JPGs up to 2048 px with a small watermark. Runs paid with credits have no watermark. See pricing for packs and the Pro plan.

5. Generate and compare

Most runs take 15 to 40 seconds. Every result has a before/after slider. Drag it slowly across the subject, not the background. You're checking that the face, the hair edges, the logo and the hands are still yours.

6. Iterate on one phrase

If the result is close, change one thing and run again: move the light ("from the left" instead of "from behind"), name a lost detail ("keep the silver ring on her right hand"), or simplify the scene. If Standard keeps missing the same instruction, try the same prompt on Pro.

How to make a new background look real

Fake-looking swaps usually fail for one of four reasons. Fix them in the prompt.

Match the light. Look at your original. Where does the light come from, and is it hard or soft? Pick a scene that could plausibly have that light. A face lit from the left with soft window light suits "overcast afternoon" or "golden hour with the sun to the left", and fights "harsh noon sun from above". Name the time of day; it carries color temperature with it.

Keep the camera angle. If you shot from slightly above, the new floor and horizon should be seen from slightly above too. Add "keep the same camera height and angle" when the result looks like the subject is floating.

Ask for shadows and reflections. Models usually add them, but saying "with a soft contact shadow under the bottle" or "reflected faintly in the wet pavement" makes it much more likely.

Keep the scale believable. A dog that is too big for the doorway or a mug the size of a lamp gives the game away. Anchor size with nearby objects: "on a kitchen counter next to a coffee maker".

Google's own prompting guide for its image models says the same thing in its editing section: describe the change, then say to keep everything else exactly the same, and spell out the critical details you need preserved (Gemini image generation docs).

Prompt templates you can copy

Swap the bracketed parts for your own details.

Plain studio or white backdrop for product shots

Place this product on a seamless pure white studio backdrop with soft, even light and a gentle contact shadow under it. Keep the product, its shape, colors and the label text exactly the same.

For a lifestyle shot instead:

Place this product on a light oak table in a bright Scandinavian kitchen, soft morning light from the left, shallow depth of field. Keep the product and label exactly as they are and keep it the same size relative to the frame.

Professional office or headshot backdrop

Replace the background with a softly blurred modern office with large windows and neutral tones. Keep his face, expression, hair, glasses and suit exactly the same. Even, flattering light on the face.

If you're starting from a selfie, our guide to a free AI headshot generator from a selfie covers framing and clothing too.

Outdoor scenes

Replace the background with a quiet beach at sunset, sun low behind her to the right. Add warm rim light on her hair and shoulders. Keep her face, dress and pose exactly the same.
Replace the background with a city street at night with neon shop signs and wet pavement, slightly out of focus. Add colored reflections from the signs on his jacket. Keep his face, clothes and pose unchanged.
Replace the background with a green forest path in soft overcast daylight, with ferns and tall trees. Keep the couple, their clothes and their pose exactly the same, and keep the same camera angle.

Seasonal and holiday backdrops

Replace the background with a cozy living room decorated for the winter holidays, a lit tree and warm string lights softly blurred behind them. Keep the family, their faces and their clothes unchanged.

Pets

Replace the background with a sunny grassy meadow with soft bokeh. Keep the dog exactly the same: fur color and pattern, collar, ear shape and expression. Add a natural shadow under its paws.

Pets lose markings easily, so name them: "the white patch on her chest", "one brown ear and one white ear".

Real estate and room context

Replace the view through the window with a calm sea view on a clear afternoon. Keep the room, the furniture, the walls and the window frame exactly the same and match the light coming in.
Place this armchair in a bright, minimal living room with a large rug and a plant beside it, daylight from a window on the right. Keep the chair's shape, fabric and color exactly the same and keep its real size relative to the room.

If you want to restyle the whole room rather than its backdrop, AI room design is built for that.

Blur the background for a portrait-mode look

Keep the background as it is but blur it strongly, like a portrait photo taken at f/1.8 with a fast lens. Keep the person sharp and completely unchanged, with clean edges around the hair.

This is the gentlest edit you can ask for: the scene stays, only the focus changes.

Common failures and how to fix them

Hair and fur edges look cut out or halo-ish. Ask for "natural hair edges blending into the new background" and pick a scene whose brightness is close to the original behind the hair. A dark-haired subject shot against a white wall and moved to a dark street is the hardest case.

The subject changed. A slightly different face, a new shirt color, a missing earring. Name what changed in the next prompt ("keep his exact face and the navy shirt"), and keep the scene request short so the model spends its attention on the subject. If Standard keeps drifting, run the same prompt on Pro.

Wrong scale or floating subject. Anchor the subject to something: a surface, a doorway, a person, a known object. Add "keep the same camera height" and "with a contact shadow".

Text on products drifts. Labels with short words usually survive, small print often doesn't. Say "keep the label text exactly as it is", keep the product large in the frame, and zoom in before you publish. For packaging with lots of copy, a plain backdrop is safer than a complex scene.

You only wanted one thing gone. If the background is fine except for a stranger, a trash bin or a power line, don't replace everything. Use remove object from image instead: you brush over the thing, and every unbrushed pixel is copied back from your original, so the rest of the photo stays identical.

Right edit, too small. Run the final prompt on HD for a 4K result.

FAQ

Can I change a photo background for free?

Yes. Without an account you get one free Standard image a day, and signing in gives 10 free credits a day, enough for two Standard images. Free results are JPGs up to 2048 px with a small watermark. No credit card is needed.

What's the difference between an AI background changer and an AI background generator?

People often use them for the same thing. A changer keeps your subject and swaps the scene; a generator can also mean creating a backdrop from nothing. Image to image does the first.

Will the AI change my face?

It shouldn't, but it can drift slightly because the model redraws the frame. Say "keep her face exactly the same", use a photo where the face is reasonably large, and compare with the before/after slider before you download.

Can I get a transparent background?

Image to image returns a complete picture with a background in it. For a white product backdrop, prompt for a seamless pure white studio background. If you need a transparent file, use a dedicated background remover.

Which model is best for background swaps?

Start with Standard (Nano Banana 2). Switch to Pro (GPT Image 2.5) if it ignores part of your prompt, and to HD for a 4K version of a result you already like.

Are my photos kept or used for training?

Uploads and results are deleted automatically after 24 hours, and images are never used to train models.
